[erin] mixxer: http://www.language-exchanges.org [erin] whoops. mixi site: http://www.mixi.jp [PaulH] i'm getting used to this chat and skype format - used it for k12 online skypecast [steve_sloan] http://sloantech.blogspot.com/2006/09/sype-at-sjsu-links.html info on SJSU story [barbara-on-air] k-12 online? [barbara-on-air] Skype Journal url, erin? [erin] www.skypejournal.com [steve_sloan] skypejournal.com [erin] up to 100 in a skypecast, yes [steve_sloan] I am dropping on and off Skype [PaulH] The conference site is at http://k12onlineconference.org/ the conference presentation - they also used skype cast called When Night Falls there is a post conference wiki that I will post. [barbara-on-air] thanks Paul! [PaulH] Yup the skypecast did have many odd visitors but someone moderates and is able to mute people or in mute [PaulH] un muter [PaulH] They used an IM site called tappedin - http://tappedin.org/ [steve_sloan] Try phone, 408-448-3408 [erin] ok, one second [steve_sloan] I am back! [steve_sloan] No I am not [steve_sloan] I guess I used my allocation of electrons [erin] sorry y'all, this is the first time we've had this problem. [erin] if you get knocked off skype me at langlab if you can and we'll get you back on [alexsavage] We've been testing using a basic edublog to enable students to share their opinions on different issues. If you would like to have a look go to www.notreblog.edublogs.org the posts on global issues are particularly interesting. [barbara-on-air] thank you alex [alexsavage] It is a really safe way for students to experience web2.0 technology as all their comments are moderated by teachers before they go live. [PaulH] k12 online wiki tobto be found at - http://k12online.wikispaces.com/Possible+Discussion+Questions - it is a haven for those wanting to do more with web 2.0 [alexsavage] The interesting thing is that after over 400 comments posted to the blog I've only had to delete 4 [erin] alex - were they spam? or inappropriate? [PaulH] Yes the school link we have in NZ have been blogging for 12 months and have only just had one bad word posted [ChrisFuller] I'd agree- my pupils are so terrified of looking bad online, or doing something which the world can see as inappropriate, the level of comments has been really surprising! [barbara-on-air] yes paul, i find that students self moderate quite well... [barbara-on-air] Cheis: yes! especially in another language on the blog! [erin] use your treo as a modem: http://www.junefabrics.com/palmnet/ [PaulH] Yes the global learning community certainly works for me with fellow k12 colleagues we are also IM ing each other through the day - across timelzones [erin] and for you mac users: http://blog.treonauts.com/2004/09/how_to_using_th.html [alexsavage] part of the reason why children post inappropriate content on the web is because they quickly run out of anything else to say to an audience of just friends who they see in school anyway. [alexsavage] What we are trying to do is provide students with real audiences of children in other countries. This gives the students real reasons for quality communication [erin] buthaina al-othman: http://alothman-b.tripod.com/ [erin] and other treo link, courtesy of joe dale: http://joedale.typepad.com/integrating_ict_into_the_/mobile_telephones/index.html [barbara-on-air] thank you Joe! [erin] war news radio: http://www.warnewsradio.org/ [ChrisFuller] To carry on your thread, Alex, I think that's the essential thing that every MFL teacher should be looking to find new ways to do, but too many are just happy to make do with what we've got at the moment! [ChrisFuller] Skype can really allow pupils to develop their skills and knowledge, and actually develop a relationship which can mature as their languae skills mature! [barbara-on-air] exactly! [erin] another one from joe: http://joedale.typepad.com/integrating_ict_into_the_/2006/11/tes_ict_blog_ho.html [barbara-on-air] joe is a Web 2.0 machine:} [erin] indeed [PaulH] Paul signing out - the conversation has been very intersting I will try to join in again next time - thanks Barbara [barbara-on-air] Please come back soon Paul! [alexsavage] In England (I'm not sure about Wales), learning a foreign language is no longer compulsary after the age of 14. Lots of students are dropping MFL [alexsavage] This is a real worry as our country desperately needs people who can speak foreign languages. Using technology like this, the students see a real reason for learning a language now, rather than for the future [barbara-on-air] Yes indeed, I have followed Ewan McIntosh's blog...was he not the one who said MFL have to change or die? [erin] ewan: http://edu.blogs.com/edublogs/ [alexsavage] I stopped being an MFL teacher because I couldn't motivate myself to teach children to learn directions around a french town that didn't even exist! [alexsavage] However with the technology we've now got in our classrooms we can travel to France via the web and visit anywhere we want to. [erin] re: porting skype, that is a terrible way of doing things, imho [erin] it'd be nice to have a version of skype built -for- the mac from the ground up. [erin] moore's law: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore's_law [alexsavage] Great to meet you all. Sorry my connection kept dropping out. Happy to try again someday. Seeya [barbara-on-air] not a problem!
